Unlocking People
Many of the societal challenges we face today are caused by individual or organizational lock-in habits. Whether we talk about energy resources, pollution, intercultural tensions, stigmatization, obesity or the recovery from hospitalization, our behaviour plays a role in both the prevention and the (re)solution of these problems.

Routines and habits are vital for our everyday life. They are a necessary precondition; they structure our daily activities, make our life easier, and, if applied favourably, contribute to our well-being. Similarly, people make conscious decisions to act based on their goals and perceived capability to do so. Yet, these goals are not always intrinsically motivated and one’s capability to act might be underestimated. Design can stimulate favourable habits, support intrinsic goal pursuit, as well as empower people to act in favour of individual and community well-being. What impact will your design have?

Look for current interactions, routines, and rhythms. Which ones are good? Which ones might actually not contribute to well-being or have a counter effect on people’s intentions? Which ones are missing? Why are people doing the things they do? How can design unlock people?
