Urban trees’ ecological services have been largely unnoticed and underappreciated despite their significance. Pay or Care is a carbon tax system to build a mutualistic relationship between citizens and urban trees.

In order to reciprocate the trees’ services, citizens can either pay money or get partial remission by caring for trees’ health. By checking trees’ conditions with the inspection tools, citizens start to notice the trees around them and learn what the trees do and need. The sense that people and the trees are important to each other reinforces their relationships.
