WELCOME

Annemiek van Boeijen works as researcher and teacher at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering – section Design Aesthetics.

My work mainly focuses on the role of culture in design processes and impact on societies. The aim is to develop knowledge, design methods & tools that support designers to develop a culture sensitive approach to design, understanding people from a socio-cultural perspective.

IDE celebrated its 50 anniversary, including an exhibition in which alumni present their graduation projects. Watch my story here.

14th of November 2022 the sixth run of the online master elective Culture Sensitive Design (id5614-17), for both students and professionals will start. Check it out here.

From March 2018till June 2021 Valentijn Visch, Niko Vegt and I started the Healthy Storytelling project, a research-through-design project about obesity prevention through eHealth for people with low-literacy skills. We are interested in how storytelling can be used as a design element. Check it out here.

Right now, together with design researcher Charlotte de Wit and with Lekker Fit! program coordinator Dennis van der Stelt, we are now working on the implementation of the Torrie project.

A new edition of the Delft Design Guide has been launched in Spring 2020, an overview of design models, perspectives, and methods for students, tutors, and practitioners. Since the first launch in September 2013, the design guide has already been translated into Chinese and Japanese, and has been applied in our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) The Delft Design Approach (edX Delftx DDA691x).

In 2015 I defended my thesis ‘Crossing Cultural Chasms: Towards a culture-conscious approach to design‘. Doctoral thesis – AGC van Boeijen

In collaboration with designer, artist, and IDE colleague Mark of Huystee , I made a world map in which a selection of thirty student projects (Joint Master Projects and Graduation) are depicted. In all these projects culture played a role in various ways; in some the design goal was to connect cultures.
