I’m a product designer and an assistant professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the TU Delft. I research and teach in the areas of user research and design for interaction. I am specialised in qualitative research methods, user research as a generative step in product design, and inclusive design.
In recent years I have been very closely involved with design research for energy efficient housing. New home technologies require new interfaces in the home and change people’s interactions with their home. Currently I contribute to themes 1,2 and 8 of the IEBB project and co-supervise Evert van Beek’s PhD project on the users’ perspective on heat pump use.
Other research interests include design research for patient empowerment, for example in orthopaedic rehabilitation, and design for the user perspective on smart technology during travel, where I co-supervise Sumalee Udomboonyanupap’s PhD project.
I have set up and run two large scale (100 + students) design courses at the faculty, Exploring Interactions and DfI Research Methodology, and have contributed to many other courses. Currently I run two elective courses for Masters students:
- Prototyping for Interaction and Participation, which teaches design researchers how to support stakeholders in envisioning their future interactions with things in collaborative sessions.
- Inclusive Design, which is connected to the Delft Inclusive Design Lab and promotes the design of everyday interactions to be inclusive for as many people as possible. The Delft Inclusive Design Lab is a platform for collaboration. You are welcome to join us in connecting students, societal stakeholders and companies in shaping and learning about the latest developments in inclusive design. Get in touch!
Other roles
For some years I have been a council member of the Design Research Society. I have been involved in running several the biannual conferences in various roles, most recently in 2020 as the chair of the review committee, running the review procedure and producing the proceedings.
