Light Table for demented elderly
Demented elderly suffer from disturbances in their circadian rhythm and sufficient lighting can positively influence it. Although the benefits of sufficient exposure to light on the well-being of demented elderly are well known, the lighting conditions in nursing homes are still insufficient. The design goal was to create a lighting system for nursing homes that improves residents’ level of physical activity. It should incorporate the factors of circadian rhythm, the effects of light on the emotional state and improved self-confidence of residents. It needs to have qualities of a natural phenomenon, making it fit the environment, and being non-threatening to the residents. The result is a Light Table which brings bright light more efficiently into the eyes of the residents than lighting from the ceiling. Interactive objects change ambient lighting patterns in the table edge when they are placed at the middle of the tabletop. Two light table prototypes were installed in a nursing home. Results show promising indications that the bright light and the stimuli have a positive effect on the residents. Residents are more awake and communicative, while they still experience their environment as cozy.
