To build trust, you need collaboration
Introduction
We realize that a good collaboration is helpful to build the trust experience in diving with AI.
There are various kinds of collaboration can be occurred in the whole situation, among driver, car and the outside environment. And the relationship between drivers and cars and what kind of role the car is playing is constantly shifting in these collaborations.
In our weeks of work, we came up with three different concepts of collaboration and dived in through testing& analyzing. We hope to achieve a trust system between driver and car.
Concept Embodiment: Movement
Physical collaboration
?creating car movement by movement, we move in the same way?
Idea:
For our first idea, we looked at the biggest difference in cooperation between the car and the driver. Here we saw that it was actually the car making large movements while you, the driver, hardly moved at all. Using image recognition, we wanted the driver to move the car by making large movements.
Video: Video of the interaction
Goal: To explore how the collaboration will work when you have to make a big movement in the car
Finding:
- This collaboration is kind of traditional relationship about human with the car. Drivers using whole body movement to control the car instead of just using hands to hold the steering wheel.
- Physical movement is interesting. It mobilizes the person's maximum body movement, and the human's sense of control over the body is transferred to the driving experience.

Concept Translating: Breaking the Bubble
Environment collaboration
?Collaborate with your car to get the inside out?
Idea:
In this concept, we give outside-inside & inside -outside communication flows to break the interaction bubbles between inside and outside the car. In this context, as a medium, ?car language? translates the intentions between inside and outside.
Goal: To explore communication flow and other possibilities about breaking the bubble between the driver in the car and the environment outside the car.
Finding:
- The driver allows uncontrollable factors to come in and build collaborative relationships with the environment.
- Car language is an interesting way for both outside and inside people to communicate. Unlike traditional car indication sounds, such as honking warnings and light indications, car language better attracts attention like a human language and achieve a better harmony in the environment.
- Give more clear meaning to show various intentions to make this communication more understandable for both outside and inside.

Concept Negotiation: Efficient collaboration
Sustainable collaboration
?Finding common ground with the car in a collaborative conversation?
Idea:
The idea is a direct collaboration between car and driver to together drive most efficiently considering speed, driver?s willing, safety and other underlying influence. We give the car kind of agency to act and react to the driver and the environment.
Goal: In this concept, we explored the role of the car as an equal in a collaboration for the best sustainable solution
Finding:
- Lighting interaction was a nice subtle way of communication between car and user.
- A talking communication was an interesting way to open up a deeper layer within speed &safety.
- The driver gave up a part of agencies, but got more information from the car. Through the data sharing and a transparent communication to achieve the collaboration.

What is Next?
This three directions are interesting starts to give us insights to go deep in. Compared with physical collaboration and audio-led collaboration, it is more expected a Car-human equal collaboration. We are trying to combine useful insights for all 3 concepts in the future and focus more about the negotiation.
We need to do next?
- Define a reasonable and effective way to share data
- More exploration in ways of communication
- Think about how to deal with complex collaboration situations
- Prototyping and Iterating
