{"id":1296,"date":"2017-05-18T20:08:23","date_gmt":"2017-05-18T20:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studiolab.ide.tudelft.nl\/studiolab\/persuasivegamedesign\/?p=1296"},"modified":"2017-05-18T20:09:25","modified_gmt":"2017-05-18T20:09:25","slug":"awareness-about-critical-raw-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studiolab.ide.tudelft.nl\/studiolab\/persuasivegamedesign\/2017\/05\/18\/awareness-about-critical-raw-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Awareness about Critical Raw Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In t<a href=\"http:\/\/studiolab.ide.tudelft.nl\/studiolab\/persuasivegamedesign\/files\/2017\/05\/Katherine-WHALEN.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1297 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/studiolab.ide.tudelft.nl\/studiolab\/persuasivegamedesign\/files\/2017\/05\/Katherine-WHALEN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a>he Loop<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Design of a Serious Game to Create Awareness about Critical Raw Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The goal of this project was to create a tool that could help raise awareness about critical raw\u00a0 materials.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Critical\u00a0 raw\u00a0 materials,\u00a0 or\u00a0 materials with high economic importance and significant supply risk, have been receiving increased attention in recent years.\u00a0 As this project\u00a0 is\u00a0 conducted\u00a0 for\u00a0 Dutch\u00a0 companies,\u00a0 the project focuses on critical raw materials as defined by the European Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research<br \/>\n<\/strong>In\u00a0 order\u00a0 to\u00a0 develop\u00a0 the\u00a0 tool,\u00a0 literature research\u00a0 was\u00a0 conducted\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 topic\u00a0 of\u00a0 critical\u00a0 raw\u00a0 materials\u00a0 and\u00a0 product\u00a0 design. The major takeaway from the analysis was that there is no clear-cut solution to dealing with critical raw materials.\u00a0 A tool exploration phase led to a serious game being selected as the vessel to transfer knowledge about critical raw materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concept &amp; Evaluation<br \/>\n<\/strong>The game was developed from six initial design directions.\u00a0 Game methodology was used to assess the developed concept.\u00a0 The process was\u00a0 iterative, with each session building off the other.\u00a0 A total of eight product evaluation sessions were conducted for the game.\u00a0 Sessions were done with future users of the tool, academics from business and design, and industry and government representatives.\u00a0 While the first four sessions focused mainly on\u00a0 the\u00a0 game\u00a0 play\u00a0 rather\u00a0 than\u00a0 content,\u00a0 the\u00a0 last\u00a0 four\u00a0 were\u00a0 designed\u00a0 to\u00a0 evaluate\u00a0 the game on its knowledge content and learning outcomes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions<br \/>\n<\/strong>In the Loop: The Critical Raw Materials game is the final result of the evaluation sessions.\u00a0 It is a board game where players are presented with critical raw material issues as they try to produce products.\u00a0 Players must make strategic choices to avoid bankruptcy, continue making their product, and win.\u00a0 Product cards allow customization of\u00a0 game\u00a0 play\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 users\u00a0 while\u00a0 material\u00a0 cards provide more information and greater depth to the subject.\u00a0 The\u00a0 tool\u2019s ability to instigate discussion about the topic of critical raw materials would be beneficial to the FME-CWM Association, as it would lead to increased awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Following graduation, The game was\u00a0further refined and the game\u2019s production was crowdfunded.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katherine A.
