As you can see in the diagram presented above, an iteration in IxD consists of three main phases each involving a set of design activities to achieve the goals of each phase: an iteration starts by defining the problem space, continues by conceptualizing possible solutions and ends by demonstrating the impact/value of a chosen design solution.

The diagram highlights two important characteristics of an IxD project that you will learn in this course:

The iterative nature of a project: iterations are possible at all levels of a design project. As a designer you are expected to assess whether more research, deeper analysis, number of tests, variety in sketches, etc. are needed to achieve the goals aimed at every phase. Due to time restrictions, for this course you are asked to perform one iteration by following the solid arrows in the diagram. Anyways, when communicating/reporting your work you are expected to reflect whether and what type of iteration may be needed by looking at the dashed arrows.

The importance of prototyping: the main focus of this course is to let you experience and reflect on the role of different prototyping activities to implement design principles that fit your target group and context of use. In the second phase, conceptualize, you will develop lo-fi and hi-fi prototyping techniques to explore, test and communicate several implementations with your peers, design team and coach. In the third phase, demonstrate, you will develop an interactive prototype to evaluate the proposed concept with real users in their context of use.

<< back

The course Interaction & Electronics (I&E) offers you a hands on opportunity to experience an iteration of a typical Interaction Design (IxD) project.
