Public | Private
<\/b>This year\u2019s theme invites you to consider from a designerly perspective the differences, contrasts and overlaps between private and public domains. Where once the boundaries between the private and the public were clear-cut and meaningful, the emergence of new domestic and urban technologies, innovative forms of community and the sharing economy have done much to challenge these boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our theme is also an opportunity to consider more deeply the relations between humans as individuals and as a collective. In art, religion and philosophy we find countless reflections of the tensions between individual rights and collective needs, personal values and social norms, lasting traditions and the capacity to break free from them. On this level, the relations between private and public domains also express a deeper conflict between individual agency and the power of collective structures. As designers, how does this tension affect our thinking and practices?<\/span><\/p>\n
