What is the Interactive Smart Bin?

The interactive smart bin will help you recycle your trash and teach you about trash types! Before you enter your room in the citizen M hotel, you can throw your trash away in a sustainable way in the hotel lobby!

HOW

The bin uses AI to understand drawings and link them to trash types. The bin asks the user to make a drawing of your trash or pick an existing drawing, and present it to the bin. This can be done on a big interactive drawing panel, in P5.

The AI of the bin will then guess what type of trash you have in your hands and direct you to the right trash type! When it guesses correct, the right bin will open so you can throw your trash away.

WHY

CitizenM experiences difficulties with recycling of trash within their hotel, especially because a lot of guests take trash from outside of the hotel and throw it away in the hotel rooms.

When we encourage people to throw away their trash before they enter the room, we can increase the recycling of the used trash and reduce the trash being brought up to the rooms!

The making of

To present our concept, we build a prototype that represents the interactive smart bin. Below you can see the progress of our trash bin!

The exhibition!

For the exhibition, we created a lobby in the citizen M hotel. Together with a nice spot to chill, some art on the walls and some candles - we presented our Interactive Smart Bin. We invite guests to come and interact with the bin, by moving the lids to attract their attention.

Afterwards, the voiceflow will talk the user through the interaction and challenge them to a game of trash pictionary! A user can choose between a long creative interaction or a shorter one!
