Goal
The mirror prepares the patient on what the face will look like during different stages of the recovery process. Scrolling through different stages and listening to voice memos of loved ones helps them to feel comfortable about the process and feel ready to face surgery.
Explanation of concept
- The doctor explains the process of the surgeries; that there will be several steps, scars, and wounds.
- Then the patient is invited to go to the magic mirror and he gets the magic wand. The doctor explains the gestures.
- By swiping right and left and the patient can go through the face filters and see how his face will develop over time.
- If the patient makes a calling motion, he will hear encouraging voice messages from loved ones.
Used technologies

Video
Snapchat filters
sStage 1: Just after surgery. Open wounds on nose and forehead and some markings from the operation
Stage 2: Open wound on the forehead
Stage 3: Obvious scars
Stage 4: Small scar
Findings from testing
- Seeing your face changing was encouraging because it went from bad to beautiful, so it gave motivation.
“I really wanted to go to the future. I was still not happy about the in-between, but was curious for the end”
- The audio was encouraging, people started smiling and felt loved.
- The hand gestures were not very intuitive, because we Wizard of Ozzed it. In the next prototype, there should be feedback and feedforward on the screen.
- We should give the patient more time (maybe even time alone) to process the emotions that the filters evoke.
