Experiencing Life with AI
AI is already present in various places in our lives, even when the context of a vehicle is considered. We wanted to tackle this presence from the root and understand how much people actually interact with this presence.
We have realized that a big part of this experience was trust.
- How do we trust devices that interact with us, including AI?
- How do we trust people around us?
Context: outside of the car
We tried to explore this through a simple interaction model. The context for our prototypes is the outside of the car.
- The first reason is that we think the interaction with your car begins outside of the car.
- The other reason for this is that we believe the appearance of an object, person or animal influences how much you trust them. Once you have stepped into the car, you already decided to trust the car and therefore the AI that the car contains.
Your Personal Assistant Vehicle
The focus on the first prototype is the Tone of Voice. The goal of this prototype is to find out what types of voices people trust the most.
In this model, you interact with a brand new vehicle you have just bought. You introduce yourselves to each other before your journey for the next time. Before starting your scheduled journey, you have a little conversation once again.
The user can experience an unexpected voice talking to them in a lively and human-like conversation despite doing things that a smart vehicle might do in the future. This juxtaposition brings different reactions from people.
With this scenario we wanted the participants to experience;
- meeting with a new AI
- think about their feelings about this AI
- think about trust

Thinking about ?Sense of Control?
In this model, you can communicate with vehicles by gestures from outside. Imagine your hands are full and want to open the door of the vehicles, you can use your legs to communicate to them.
In the very beginning, we have spent some time thinking about what do people do to save their experiences and memories. The idea behind this is how to implement gestures while entering the car to improve the interaction between the user and the car.
With this scenario, we wanted the participants to experience;
- Communicating with AI through gesture
- Consider the form of gesture that might be understandable for AI
- Learn AI?s feeling through their reaction

How do we have conversations without talking?
In this model, you can get information and feedback from vehicles through light. We are imagining a future scenario where vehicles show their emotion or practical information to their drivers or people pass by.
The idea behind this is how to implement light as a response when a person is approaching their car and how they can communicate with this type of feedback? To test this idea we have created an experiment in a dark room where the participants approach a box that is emitting light inside a dark room.
The goal of this prototype is to find out whether people gain a feeling of trust from interacting only with light:
- Interpreting ambiguous outputs from vehicles
- Touch with and talk to the vehicles to see their reaction
- How trust can be built with presences that cannot give you human-like reactions
The Future
We plan to continue exploring trust in different ways and wish to create a complex experience with your vehicle.
- Choose a design direction
- More prototyping
- Specifying our users
- Creating a concept
