Caring AI: Henk Ford
Who is Henk Ford?
For the drivers and passengers of Ford, we are developing Henk, a caring trustworthy AI friend in the shape of a talking car. Henk wants to be there for you. He can sense how you are feeling and listens to you. He also has a sense of self-worth, which means that he won?t let you treat him badly. He won?t let you drive irresponsibly and put both of you in risk. Of course he does this in an empathetic way.

Three skills of Henk
- Detecting fatigue
- Starting a friendly conversation
- Caring about you
For the past weeks, we have taught Henk three ways to be a better friend for Sam the driver. First, he learned to recognize human facial expressions to detect whether someone?s mood is positive or negative. Second, he was taught to tell an interactive story. Third, he refined his skills to better understand how someone is feeling and understood that he should start a conversation depending on the person?s emotions. He also realized something about his own identity. It?s the fact that he is a caring AI.

Exploration ideas
- Explore the physical realm through electronics (Arduino, sensors)
- Design new tangible experiences for automated cars in which physical interference becomes unnecessary (eg. no more pressing gas and brake, steering the wheel, operating the gear)
- Explore more non-verbal communication between Henk and the driver
- Challenging the boundaries of anthropomorphism
