?Deepen the relationship with your car?

Automobile is a part of the owner?s life. The relationship between the automobile and the owner is what we are interested in. We envision the relationship to be like a friend or coach, that supports you along your journey.

AI can play an important role to redefine the relationship between the automobile and the owner.

?We want to use AI to strengthen the relationship an owner or driver has with its car.

Insights exploration

During the past weeks, we found out that we found the relationship an owner or driver has with their car is an interesting direction. Our concepts were all about helping, assisting, and guiding the driver in a friendly way in different situations.

Insights we gained about our direction:

The concepts

The concepts were developed based on the three fields: connection, smart cars, and communication. This main area is all connected by the interaction between the driver and the car. As we said the red line that connects all the dots is the realization of a deeper connection whit the driver and his car.

But this main theme is developed in three different ideas to explore different ways to create a connection with your car:

  1. Let?s Talk

  1. Together but alone

  1. Packing

What was the situation for each concept during the exploring part of the week? Before actually having the three possible situations we thought about what could be the environment in and outside the car and how this environment can change the driver?s perspective and experience.

All the ideas acted out

? Concept 1 - Let?s Talk

How AI is involved? The AI is necessary to detect facial expressions, gestures, and the position of the driver. In this way, the car could give feedback to the driver about whether to engage in the conversation or focus on the road.

Main insight: The AI could be an integrated part of the driver?s behavior, but this concept is more on the ty than on actually involving everyone in the conversation.

Concept: Connect the driver to the passengers and fill the gap between them by safely using conversation.

Why? The conversation between passengers and drivers is not facilitated by the position of the driver; he is in the front part and could not turn around to have an actual conversation without actually getting distracted.

Here is a little role play about what the concept is.

Prototyping & Testing

For prototyping this concept we split it into separate parts to explore the different possibilities of AI:

?Concept 2 - Together but alone

Concept: Trying to connect people not only in the car but also outside. The main purpose of the concept is to make a long drive-alone journey not so lonely by connecting different solo drivers in the same street.

Why? Driving alone can sometimes get boring, especially when you are on a long drive. We want to allow drivers to fill in the void with a conversation with another driver. This could also lend the driver to a very fun and different situation.

How AI is involved? The AI has the main purpose of detecting the other cars around the ?main car? and to see if they?re alone or not. If so, the AI can connect the two cars and stimulate the conversation between them through machine learning.

Main insight: The concept wants to put the attention on the fun part of knowing someone differently. We found out that the experience can get awkward and it raises questions, like: ?Why would I need this?? Next to that can this concept also avoid mean behavior between different drivers?

Prototyping & Testing

For this prototype, we mainly focussed on using a voice assistant to guide you.

?Concept 3 - Packing

How AI is involved? Is involved by using sensors to help the driver to put the boxes in the right way in the van. The AI should perceive the movement of the objects, the maximum and minimum load, and the positions inside the van to make the delivery more efficient.

Main insight: Delivering for small businesses could be a little more complicated than that; that?s why we want to focus on one issue at the time, the first of all, in our opinion, in the capacity to control the object movement. If the company can control that it could reduce some troubles with fragile items etc.

Concept: Create an algorithm with AI that can provide information to the driver to make the delivery for small businesses more sustainable in both time and cost. It could also be implemented in a passenger car if it is going on vacation.

Why? Improving transportation efficiency could significantly decrease the cost and make a profit from it. The industry already provides some examples such as, reducing the size of the packaging, modularizing the product, etc. However, small businesses do not have such high-tech to maximize their transportation efficiency. This concept gives a possible solution.

Prototyping & Testing

For prototyping we shifted our focus on letting the driver know how the load is doing in the trunk. This because it fitted more with the given materials and software. The AI will let you know whether the load endured light or heavy vibrations.
