Ford: Fresh air

AbstractThe Ford van will facilitate a relaxation experience during the break moments in the intensive workday of handymen by providing a comfortable cabin that is fully equipped with a portable coolbox to keep drinks and lunch cool, a place to store waste and a moment to purify the lungs from all the dusty proceedings with desired calming healthy smells. In this way, the Ford van can be a handyman?s true companion by providing a healthy and relaxing space for handymen to re-energize for their physical work load.

2030-2035

Introduction

Waking up at dawn, handymen have intensive days of hard work ahead. They are always on the run with their driving garage, their true companion: the handyman van. When it?s finally time for a break of all the physical labor, it?s time to relax. But what facilities do they need to enjoy their well deserved break?

Goal

The goal of this project is to facilitate relaxation for handymen inside a Ford van, so they have a moment for themselves during the work break.

Vision

In creating relaxation, we want to contribute not only to practical facilities handymen desire, but also their health, since handymen need to work in a dusty environment and we believe air quality in general is becoming a more popular topic in the coming years.

What's new?

The concept

The concept exists of multiple parts and is designed for 2030-2035 to facilitate a ?Handymancave? in which handymen are surrounded by facilities they desire to embed in relaxation during their break.

The break moment will take place in the cabin of the van which will be fully blocked from the trunk, so no dust can come into the cabin.

An air purifying system is integrated in the dashboard and the front of the car (which can be operated through the screen and the physical buttons underneath). Normally a motor would be located underneath the hood, but in this concept it will be an electric van. Therefore, more space will be available.

Handymen can take a break from their dusty activities and purify their lungs to stay healthy. Handymen can buy desired smells at supermarkets or gas stations and put it in the air purifying system underneath the hood. The scent will be inserted at the front of the van and will blend with the air. The futuristic filters will cause the air to be filtered and clean.

These slider buttons are integrated in the dashboard so handymen can adjust the intensity of the inserted smell and temperature as you can experience in this digital prototype of the screen: https://xd.adobe.com/view/44aa638b-8d07-4c0f-594d-184444032dc7-329b/?fullscreen *

*In this prototype you operate the sliding bars with your mouse, but in the physical cabin you would operate the screen with the physical slide buttons underneath.

A removable coolbox is designed to be placed in between the two main chairs in the cabin instead of the smaller third chair that is usually situated in a van. The coolbox will keep the handyman?s lunch and drinks cool. A part of the coolbox is a separate removable bin so handymen can collect their waste at one central point. Furthermore, the coolbox can be taken out when it?s warm outside and can then also serve as a seat.

Cup holders are included in the lid of the coolbox which can also serve as arm rest or small desk to make administration notes. The height of the coolbox is adjustable with a system that?s integrated in the floor of the van.

The bit larger cabin of a van allows the car seat to be further adjustable into a relaxation mode: the chair can come a bit forward so the back of the chair can lean back.

Storyboard

When a handyman has rounded off a certain task or feels his stomach rumbling he can finally take a moment to have a break and relax:

Why handymen?

Handymen conduct physically intensive work in a busy schedule that requires flexibility. Their break moments are their only moment to rest during the day, which makes relaxation extra important for them. According to the survey conducted and an interview, handymen say that they need to work in dusty and filthy environments during their day. Therefore, providing fresh air in their break time becomes beneficial for their health and helps them getting in a relaxing mood. In the van, they can enjoy the fresh air before getting back to work. This concept introduces the van to provide all practical facilities desired by handymen, as they indicated themselves:

*The results are in Dutch so the research was more accessible to handymen that participated in this research.

Why Ford?

In this concept Ford can support handymen in their intensive physical work by including extra functions in their vans, so they are provided with all facilities needed for a relaxing break moment. With these facilities, Ford also overcomes health-issues caused by handyman?s dusty work environment with an air purifying system, making use of future technologies.
