Vision

In 2025, cars will be able to partly drive autonomously. They can drive in a step-foot pace next to their driver. The courier will still be necessary to deliver parcels to the customer face-to-fac. But now he can choose between different driving modes to help him save energy and improve his working efficiency. The delivery sector will be adapting this functionality into their way of working. Since delivering needs to be quick and reliable, this industry needs to be as efficient as possible.

Prototype Details

The Smart Ring

The concept contains a smart ring that helps the courier in his daily tasks. This should make it easier to scan the parcels and this ring will notify the courier when something important is going on.

This prototype explored the comfort of wearing a huge ring. We discovered that the the ring should have the maximum size of one phalanx. When this size is maintained, the courier will not be bothered by the device.

The Van

We didn't focus on redesigning the overall appearance of the van, but we considered what it will look like when it is in the follow-mode and what will be the features.

When it is in the follow-mode, the light outside the van will start blinking as a way to communicate with the surroundings.

When it is in the follow-mode, the van is able to prevent collision with objects and pedestrians due to the multiple sensors on it.

The Handheld Device

The handheld device will be tied to the courier's arm during the work. In the ideal situation, the van can be fully commanded by face recognition and gestures. But in a busy street or in a dark environment, this might be hard to do for the van. The couriers carry a handheld device for the administration of the deliveries and the overview of the addresses. This handheld device will be upgraded with the application to control the van.

The user interface of the application

Click the link below to experience our app.

Note: the app is not fully functional, and since in the real situation it will be a more time-based and action-based app, the "after delay" interaction was applied, which means sometimes you may need to wait for some seconds to see what will happen :)

Future recommendations

Due to the situation, we are currently in, the user tests have been quite superficial and with users outside of the target audience. The first recommendation is to do better testing. Targeted at the right audience and deeper than just asking for a first impression of your roommate who is actually busy with their own deadlines and exams.

Right now a few critical situations have been explored. Due to the fact that critical situations are critical, they need to be even deeper explored. What scenarios can be imagined in the worst case, and how can the courier solve this?
