-We brainstormed about the applications of our system based on the feedback given by Ford
Monday May 25
Today we thought about how much we missed doing physical prototyping and decided to get a taste of that next Friday. All we did until now was create demonstrations on how we think it should look and work. This approach gives vivid explanations and visuals but does not deliver upon the fact that single elements from within our ecosystem need to be tested. After our call with Dan, it became clear that we need to break that big box into several small boxes. Each of these can be tested separately. Thus this Friday we want to touch upon physical prototyping:
-The tablet form factor
-The docking experience
-how to dock?
-how does it attach?
-how does it react after docking?
-BYOD vs integrated screen vs universal form-factor
-UI elements in...
...dashboard
...tablet
...inside/outside of the car
-Connection with the dashboard
-Sound that happen in the ecosystem
-Screen position
-driver seat vs passenger seat
-Experience outside of the car
-integrated in uniform?
-click to belt?
-Car specific experience?
-How does it learn?

Big companies like Coolblue, Postnl and DHL have their own fleet of vans, cars, other means of transportation at their disposal. Such fleets of mobility all have in common that they are used by many different drivers on a daily basis. Changing to a different van every day results in adapting user-specific settings that define your commute. We propose a solution by personalizing the experience through an employee-owned device that is context-aware and remembers past commutes (and preferences) for future trips. The device can be docked in any van that is part of a company's fleet, using your previous experiences to improve the current one of the employee.
The tablet-like device will act as an essential part of any car you want to drive. It is used to enter, start-up, and to change the van to your own preference. It connects seamlessly through docking it in the Ford approved docking station. It functions as the car telematics to control the interior environment while at the same time (when the car is not driving) it is used for job-related functions like calendars and administration purposes.
This Friday the 5th:
Docking the tablet prompts for a gesture for booting up the car. Starting the car means that the dashboard is initialized to your preference. Imagine a seamless continuation of the podcast you listened to in another car the previous day. Imagine the car being aware of your updated calendar and is already prompting the right address for your next appointment. Imagine the car altering its chair and mirrors to your liking to avoid driving strain before even entering the car. This is all possible through the universal docking station made by ford.
Question for Friday the 5th: Testing the docking experience in a car. —> booting

We spoke about the distinction that needs to be made between a universal device and a BYOD. They both have up- and downsides. The universal docking option can be useful to make a consistent interface/dashboard across the multiple vans that a handyman drives during its employment. Consistency is pleasing as a design choice while at the same time it might not be the most realistic choice concerning the current state of affairs on telematics. Electronic smart devices are among the things that are updates very frequently by their owners. By creating a semi-universal device that solely can be used in the cars made by Ford you create an extra struggle on the update site. To create something that is adapted to the market of quickly updating electronics it would be wiser to bring your own device. With this approach, you can update the telematics and the car separately.
Another advantage of using a universal device is the wide variabilities in docking the device. Within our concept docking, a device physically remains an important aspect of the interaction because it replaces the current method of key controlled ignition. Interaction with a key is a purely physical movement that gets the user from just the car to booted telematics and finally the soothing sound of an engine running. Mimicking the physicality is important to keep the experience close to how cars are currently turned on. Tesla solves this with a physical button to ignite the engine, we would like to experiment with docking a device as the physical action.
Distinction between inside and outside of the car based on the interview.
context aware system
Ways of docking:
Magnets- tune the force you need to pull the tablet away to feel just right like apple mac book charger
Suction cups- the sound it makes when the van takes your tablet from you and becomes part of the van
Grabbers- would just need to put your device on a universal area and the dashboard would grab your tablet by adjusting the walls surrounding the tablet. much like a car adjusting your seat to your measurements
Fit in place- make use of gravity. you just leave the tablet in a place and it stays there
which of these methods would be the best for our handyman van? We want the docking to be simple and satisfying interaction. Lots of universal one size fits all product solutions have a cheap preconception because the adaptability compromises the unity of the design and we want to disprove that preconception in our van

WHY
Without the hassle of getting connected, access to multiple cars with your own settings.Tablet is context aware both inside and outside the car. The biggest answer to the why question is that this tablet gives access to an ecosystem of cars while maintaining own preferences. While at the same time the company can manage their employees, while you have access to whatever car with your own tablet.
Your favorite piece of the car.
The narrative:
persona:
Henry, 53 yr old, handyman working for a fleet company. Doing daily handyman tasks for a fleet company but also for himself with his own van, Sometime has to work overnight in other cities.

Henry's own car.
getting mad with access to millions of cars.
companies:
-the fleet company
HandymanGo! - no despair, direct repair (with a custom mango + wrenches logo)
A company build upon the ecosystem, manages all its employees through the digital environment that can be accessed through the tablet. While the employees keep the digital environment up to date by carrying the tablet with them.
-Henry's own company:
Handy Henryman - Everyone's favorite private contractor .
henry his own company. Doing private contractor jobs as a job on the side. Still manages his invoices through the digital environment, so the car is aware of this too.
