In the process of forming a concept for the final installation we experimented with inflatables that contain hot air. Inflatables drawn our intention because they have the ability to create giant shapes with relatively little material. Since we would like to provide the users with a nice and warm environment we thought about using the inflatable as a heat pocket. By using hot air the inflatables will start to float, a phenomenon we are interested in. Because the inflatable stands on itself people can enter and exit the air pocket. We used this experiment to get an idea on the amount of lift force, the temperature, and the size of the air pocket.
It turned out to be rather easy to create giant air pockets filled with hot air. The larger air pockets even created a fair amount of lift. However, to control the amount of air coming in and going out turned out to be harder than expected. This resulted in very little control over the inflatable making it hard to use the air pocket as an output device.
