Book of Dilemmas for Designers

How do designers search for dilemmas?
How do they know which dilemmas to address?
How can they generate ideas to address them?

This booklet is designed to support user-centered designers in understanding the phenomenon of dilemmas (such as health vs. indulgence, career vs. family, and so on) and creating ideas for new products or services to address these dilemmas in a meaningful way. The booklet is a visually engaging summary of the main insights into designing with dilemmas. It consists of three parts: Part A tells the story of Sophie, a fictional character, who experiences a number of dilemmas during a regular day in her life. Part B outlines the main activities involved in designing with dilemmas, and finally, Part C is a show-case of dilemma-inspired product examples that address each of Sophie’s dilemmas from Part A.

Please note that this booklet is one of the outcomes of Deger Ozkaramanli’s PhD research. For original findings and insights, you can refer to the PhD thesis titled: Me against myself: Addressing personal dilemmas through design.
